Chinese Politics: Global and National

Tuesday, September 17, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

with Michelle S. Mood, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Asian Studies at Kenyon College

China has succeeded in uplifting hundreds of millions of Chinese from abject poverty using a combination of markets and control, and its global presence uses the same combination. What are the most salient aspects of China's domestic political economy and its foreign reach? In highlighting the promise and menace of the "China dream," this talk explores the logic behind China's external reach -- China's Belt and Road Initiative, expansion into the Americas, and aspirations in the South China Sea - and internal control - the anti-corruption drive, the Muslim detention camps, and the social credit system.
